Dimensions: 48"x36"
Finish Date: April, 2006
Commentary:

I could see that this image could be taken no further using the process by which I had generated it. Fortunately, I stopped before I screwed it up. The dilemma I was struggling with was, do I have a picture or do I have wallpaper?

It became clear to me, that in it, I had captured the essence of a process that has been a characteristic of my work going back to the late 1960’s when I was experimenting with silk screen monoprints. It is the basis of the Progression series of works, and started to emerge more clearly with Transitions #06 and Transitions #07.

The frame-grounded planar areas, the narrow value and chromatic range, all contribute to a shallow visual space. The only sense of figurative element is implied in the edges of planar forms.

Whether or not it may be considered to be wall paper is irrelevant. The clarity that it brought to my personal understanding of my work is what makes this an important work for me. I find its quiet complexity quite lovely.
